As Indian states race to build future-ready urban centres, Telangana has unveiled one of its most ambitious infrastructure and economic projects to date: Bharat Future City. While neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is constructing an entirely new capital city, Amaravati, Telangana is charting a different path. Under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the state is promoting Bharat Future City as its “Fourth City,” designed to ease pressure on Hyderabad while positioning Telangana as a global hub for technology, investment, and sustainable urban living.
A New Vision Beyond Hyderabad
Hyderabad has long been the backbone of Telangana’s economic growth, but rapid urbanisation has stretched its infrastructure. To address congestion and prepare for long-term expansion, the Congress-led Telangana government has planned Bharat Future City as a large-scale, integrated urban zone located to the south of Hyderabad.
Spread across approximately 765 square kilometres, the proposed city will come up along the Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam highways, extending beyond the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). This strategic location ensures strong connectivity while allowing planners to design the city without the limitations faced by older urban areas.
According to senior officials, Bharat Future City is being positioned outside the traditional limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), enabling it to function as a model city built on modern principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and future-readiness.
Future City Development Authority: Driving the Project
To ensure coordinated planning and execution, the Telangana government has established the Future City Development Authority (FCDA). The FCDA will oversee land use, infrastructure, business development, and urban planning for the entire region.
Officials say the authority’s mandate is to create an integrated ecosystem rather than a fragmented expansion. The focus will be on efficient transport networks, green spaces, digital infrastructure, and mixed-use development that combines residential, commercial, and recreational zones.
“Positioned beyond traditional GHMC boundaries, FCDA is planned as a model for future-ready, sustainable, and inclusive urbanisation,” a senior government official explained, underlining the long-term vision behind the project.
A Business-First Core with Global Ambitions
At the heart of Bharat Future City lies a 13,500-acre core business district, which will anchor the city’s economic activity. The state government plans to aggressively promote emerging technology sectors, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum computing, as part of its strategy to attract global investments.
This Central Business District will be divided into six specialised zones:
- AI City: Dedicated to artificial intelligence, data science, and next-generation digital technologies
- Health City: Focused on healthcare services, medical research, and biotech innovation
- Entertainment District: Designed to support media, film, gaming, and creative industries
- Sports Hub: Featuring world-class sports infrastructure and training facilities
- Education Zone: Anchored by universities, research institutions, and skill development centres
- Eco-Tourism Hub: Integrating green spaces, conservation areas, and sustainable tourism
Together, these districts aim to create a diversified urban economy rather than a single-industry city.
Jobs, Housing, and Economic Impact
Telangana’s IT and Industries Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, has highlighted the transformative economic impact Bharat Future City is expected to have. According to him, the project will play a vital role in Telangana’s ambition to become a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
The city is projected to generate around 13 lakh jobs, spanning technology, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and services. To support this workforce, planners have proposed residential townships capable of housing nearly 9 lakh people, ensuring that employment hubs and living spaces are closely connected.
In a major boost to skill development, the Young India Skills University is set to begin operations within the city shortly. The institution is expected to focus on industry-aligned training, preparing young professionals for jobs in advanced technologies and emerging sectors.
Additionally, about 400 acres have been earmarked exclusively for data centres, reflecting the city’s ambition to become a digital infrastructure powerhouse.
New Investments and Strategic Partnerships
One of the key drivers behind Bharat Future City is the Telangana government’s push to channel new investments signed through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at recent global summits into this region. By directing fresh projects to the Future City area, the state aims to accelerate development while avoiding further congestion in Hyderabad.
Beyond the core business zone, the city will also host:
- An electronics and advanced manufacturing zone
- A life sciences and pharmaceuticals hub
- A large-scale data centre cluster
These zones are designed to complement Telangana’s existing strengths in IT, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, while opening doors to new industries.
In a notable partnership, Reliance Foundation has teamed up with the Telangana government to establish Vantara, a wildlife conservation centre within Bharat Future City. This initiative adds an environmental and conservation dimension to the project, reinforcing its eco-friendly vision.

Connectivity and Infrastructure Advantages
Connectivity is one of Bharat Future City’s biggest selling points. Officials note that the area offers a traffic-free, half-hour drive from the international airport, thanks to its proximity to the ORR. This makes it especially attractive for global companies, data centres, and logistics-driven businesses.
Planners are also expected to integrate high-capacity road networks, public transport systems, and digital infrastructure from the outset, reducing future bottlenecks and improving quality of life for residents.

So, what is Bharat Future City really about? At its core, it represents Telangana’s attempt to rethink urban expansion. Instead of allowing Hyderabad to sprawl unchecked, the state is investing in a purpose-built city designed for the next several decades.
With a strong focus on technology, sustainability, employment generation, and global competitiveness, Bharat Future City aims to position Telangana as a leader in India’s next phase of urban and economic development. If executed as planned, it could emerge not just as Hyderabad’s relief valve, but as one of India’s most forward-looking urban centres.
