The Indian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran theatre personality Bhim Vakani, who passed away at the age of 84. The respected dramatist, actor, and director breathed his last on Tuesday morning at around 8:30 AM after battling health complications. Bhim Vakani had reportedly been suffering from paralysis for nearly one and a half years and was recently hospitalized after developing pneumonia.

His death has deeply affected family members, especially his children—popular television actress Disha Vakani and actor-sculptor Mayur Vakani, who are widely recognized for their roles in the iconic sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.

Emotional Farewell in Ahmedabad

The final rites of Bhim Vakani were performed at the Thaltej crematorium in Ahmedabad. Earlier in the day, his mortal remains were kept at the family residence in the Shyamal area of the city, where relatives and close acquaintances gathered to pay their last respects.

The atmosphere at the home was filled with grief. Around 20 to 25 family members and close friends were present. When Disha Vakani saw her father’s mortal remains, she reportedly broke down in tears. Both she and her brother Mayur Vakani were visibly devastated by the loss. Relatives had to console and support them during the emotional moments.

During the funeral procession, the siblings struggled to control their emotions as they bid their father a final farewell. Disha Vakani covered her face with a handkerchief while mourning, reflecting the deep sorrow felt by the family.

A Life Dedicated to Theatre, Television and Cinema

Bhim Vakani spent decades contributing to Indian performing arts. Known for his dedication to theatre, he worked extensively in Gujarati stage productions and also appeared in television shows and films. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between theatre, television, and cinema.

In Ahmedabad, he ran productions under the banner of Vakani Theatres, where he not only produced and directed plays but also performed as an actor. His passion for the stage was evident throughout his life.

Many successful stage productions were associated with his name. Among them were plays like Mangalfera and Pehlo Sago, where his daughter Disha Vakani appeared as a child artist in small roles under his direction. These early experiences helped shape her career in the entertainment industry.

Encouraging His Children to Pursue Art

Producer Asit Kumarr Modi, the creator of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, shared heartfelt memories while speaking about Bhim Vakani.

According to him, Bhim Vakani had always been a strong supporter of his children’s artistic ambitions. He recognized Disha Vakani’s talent early and worked tirelessly to nurture it. Modi recalled that Vakani ensured all his children received proper training and exposure to the arts.

He also mentioned that Bhim Vakani often visited Mumbai and maintained a warm relationship with the show’s team. Whenever he came to the city, he would meet them and spend time together.

Modi described his passing as a significant loss for everyone who knew him personally and professionally.

Dilip Joshi Pays Tribute

Actor Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, also paid tribute to Bhim Vakani. He said that Vakani deeply cared for both Disha and Mayur and had always supported them in pursuing careers in acting and the creative arts.

Joshi added that Bhim Vakani played a major role in encouraging Disha Vakani to move to Mumbai early in her career, a decision that eventually helped her achieve immense popularity in television.

He also recalled that Bhim Vakani collaborated with several theatre producers and directors, including Sanjay Goradia, during his long career in stage productions.

Childhood Memories Shared by Disha Vakani

In a previous interview reflecting on her childhood, Disha Vakani had shared fond memories of growing up around theatre because of her father.

She recalled how senior actresses during rehearsals and stage shows would often pull her cheeks and jokingly tell her father that his “in-house heroine” was getting ready. At that time, she did not fully understand what the word “heroine” meant, but hearing those comments planted the seed of becoming an actress someday.

Disha also remembered traveling with her father across villages in Gujarat to perform awareness shows promoting social causes such as anti-alcohol campaigns and “Save the Daughter” initiatives.

These performances were often held in open spaces where audiences sat on the ground or watched from rooftops. According to her, these experiences gave her valuable exposure as a performer and helped shape her acting skills.

She also described how school vacations for her were not about holidays in the usual sense. Instead, they meant joining her father on theatre tours and performing in plays.

Influence on the Theatre Community

Poet and writer Prashant Kedar Jadhav paid tribute to Bhim Vakani, calling him a dedicated artist who devoted his life to theatre, television, and cinema with equal passion.

He described Vakani as a transparent and sincere individual whose commitment to his craft inspired an entire generation of performers. According to Jadhav, although the physical body may perish, great artists like Bhim Vakani achieve immortality through their work and influence.

He also highlighted that Vakani’s greatest achievement was witnessing the success of his children—Disha Vakani becoming a beloved actress and Mayur Vakani gaining recognition as both an actor and sculptor.

Appearances in Bollywood Films

Beyond theatre, Bhim Vakani also appeared in several well-known Bollywood films. One of his notable roles was in the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan, produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. In the film, he played the character of Qazi Saheb in a small but memorable supporting role.

He also appeared in films such as Swades, starring Shah Rukh Khan, and Lajja, featuring Madhuri Dixit.
