Red-footed booby: A remarkable wildlife discovery has drawn the attention of birdwatchers and conservation enthusiasts in Gujarat after a rare Pacific seabird, the Red-footed Booby, was found in a weakened condition near the coastal village of Sachana in Jamnagar district.
The bird, which is typically associated with tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean and is rarely seen in India, was rescued after local bird experts noticed it struggling near the shoreline. The unusual sighting has generated excitement among ornithologists, as records of the species in the country are extremely scarce.
The rare bird was first spotted by noted birdwatchers Yashodhan Bhatia and Ashish Pankhaniya during a visit to the coastal area. Realizing that the bird appeared exhausted and unable to fend for itself, they quickly arranged for its rescue and treatment.
The bird was subsequently handed over to Firozkhan Pathan, a well-known wildlife rescuer in Jamnagar who is popularly known among local bird enthusiasts as the city’s “Birdman.” According to Pathan, the bird was suffering from dehydration and severe exhaustion, likely caused by prolonged exposure to heat and challenging environmental conditions.
Speaking about the rescue, Pathan explained that the Red-footed Booby is a pelagic seabird, meaning it spends most of its life far from land, soaring over open oceans. Unlike many coastal birds, it rarely comes ashore except for breeding. Because of its ocean-going lifestyle, encounters with the species on land are considered highly unusual.
Wildlife experts believe the bird may have been pushed off its normal migratory or feeding route by adverse weather conditions, including storms over the sea. Another possibility is that it became disoriented during flight and drifted thousands of kilometres away from its natural range before reaching the Gujarat coast.

It can travel vast distances over open water and spends much of its time searching for fish near the ocean surface. Unlike many seabirds that nest on cliffs or rocky islands, the Red-footed Booby commonly builds nests in trees located on remote islands and coastal habitats. Its striking appearance and distinctive red feet make it one of the most recognizable members of the booby family.
