Ration Card: Silao Block Sets One-Week Target to Issue 2,535 New Beneficiary Cards

Authorities in Bihar’s Silao block have launched a special drive to expand access to Ration Card, setting a target of issuing 2,535 new cards within the next week. The initiative aims to ensure that eligible low-income families receive the benefits of the Public Distribution System (PDS) without unnecessary delays.

The decision was announced during a block-level meeting held on Tuesday at the Silao Block Headquarters auditorium. The meeting was chaired by Additional District Magistrate-cum-Additional Collector Rajeev Ranjan Kumar Sinha and attended by local officials, elected representatives, and members of the Nagar Panchayat.

One-Week Deadline to Complete the Target

During the meeting, the Additional Collector informed officials that the state government has assigned Silao block the responsibility of preparing 2,535 new Ration Card. He directed all concerned departments and public representatives to work together and complete the process within one week.

Officials were encouraged to actively assist eligible residents with the application process so that deserving families are not left out of the welfare scheme. The administration emphasized that coordinated efforts at the village and ward levels would be essential to achieving the target within the stipulated timeframe.

Application Process and Required Documents

Authorities clarified that applicants should submit all available supporting documents along with their applications. However, they also assured residents that applications would not be rejected simply because some family members do not yet possess Aadhaar cards.

In such cases, applicants have been instructed to include the names of all family members in the application while attaching Aadhaar details only for those whose identification documents are already available. This measure is intended to prevent eligible households from facing unnecessary delays due to incomplete Aadhaar enrollment.

Special Focus on Eligible Families Left Out

The administration also directed officials to identify economically weaker families whose names may have been removed from the existing ration card list despite still meeting the eligibility criteria.

As part of the campaign, each Gram Panchayat has been asked to facilitate applications from at least five eligible beneficiaries every day, while every ward is expected to help two qualified applicants submit their forms daily. Officials believe this grassroots approach will help ensure wider coverage across both rural and urban areas of the block.

In addition, special emphasis has been placed on maximizing the number of applications on July 26, when Panchayat Day activities are scheduled to take place.

Eligibility Criteria for New Ration Cards

Officials reiterated the income limits that determine eligibility for new Ration Cards under the government’s guidelines.

Residents living in urban areas with a monthly household income below ₹20,000 can apply for a ration card. In rural areas, the income threshold has been fixed at less than ₹10,000 per month.

The administration said priority will be given to people engaged in low-income occupations, including:

  • Street vendors and hawkers
  • Vegetable sellers
  • Auto-rickshaw drivers
  • Handloom weavers
  • Homemakers
  • Daily wage labourers
  • Small business owners and self-employed workers

The objective is to ensure that economically vulnerable households have access to subsidized food grains and other benefits available through the Public Distribution System.

Who Will Not Qualify?

The administration also reminded residents that certain households are not eligible for new Ration Card under the prescribed rules.

Families may be declared ineligible if they own a four-wheeler, live in a permanent house with more than three rooms, or have an air conditioner installed at home. In rural areas, households owning more than 2.5 acres of agricultural land or possessing large farming equipment such as tractors or heavy threshers will also fall outside the eligibility criteria.

Officials urged applicants to provide accurate information, noting that verification will be carried out before final approval.

Continuous Verification Process

The Block Supply Officer informed attendees that the process of issuing new ration cards and cancelling ineligible ones will continue on a regular basis.

He also warned that beneficiaries currently receiving subsidized food grains despite not meeting the eligibility conditions would be identified through verification drives. According to officials, action may be taken against such cases, including recovery of the value of food grains obtained under the scheme if found ineligible.
