The investigation into self-styled godman Ashok Kharat has gathered significant momentum in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, with authorities receiving an overwhelming response from the public. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the state government to probe serious allegations against Kharat, has received more than 50 phone calls within just five days, officials confirmed on Friday.
The surge in complaints comes after the SIT made two dedicated mobile numbers public, urging citizens to come forward with any information or report alleged crimes linked to Ashok Kharat. According to senior officials involved in the probe, the response has been consistent and substantial, with the team receiving an average of 15 to 20 calls daily since the helplines were activated.
Multiple FIRs Registered Against Ashok Kharat
So far, law enforcement agencies have registered eight First Information Reports (FIRs) against Ashok Kharat. These complaints include serious allegations such as sexual assault, extortion, and the circulation of objectionable material. Authorities say the number of cases could increase as more victims and witnesses step forward.
Kharat, who operated from Nashik and headed a temple trust in Sinnar, had built a considerable following over the years. His influence reportedly extended into political circles, with several leaders visiting him in the past. However, his arrest on March 18 marked a dramatic turn in his public image.
Arrest Triggered by Rape Allegations
The case against Ashok Kharat gained national attention after a 35-year-old woman accused him of repeatedly raping her over a period of three years. Based on her complaint, police initiated action that led to his arrest. Following this development, several other women reportedly came forward with similar allegations, prompting authorities to widen the scope of the investigation.
Officials stated that the SIT is currently verifying each complaint carefully to ensure the authenticity of the claims. “We are receiving a large number of calls, and every piece of information is being examined thoroughly,” a senior officer said.
Confidentiality Assured to Complainants
To encourage more victims and witnesses to speak up, the SIT has assured complete confidentiality to those providing information. Officials emphasized that the identity of complainants will be protected at all costs, a move aimed at building trust and ensuring that fear does not prevent individuals from coming forward.
This assurance appears to have played a key role in the steady flow of information being received by the investigation team.
SIT Conducts Search Operation with Forensic Team
As part of its ongoing probe, the SIT conducted a detailed search of Ashok Kharat’s office in Nashik on March 27. The operation was carried out in the presence of a forensic science team to ensure that all potential evidence was properly documented and preserved.
During the search, officials recovered several important items, including documents, files, a personal diary, and other papers that could provide crucial insights into the allegations against him. These materials are now being examined as part of the investigation.
Authorities believe that the evidence collected from the premises could help establish patterns of behavior and potentially corroborate statements made by complainants.

Arms Licence Suspended Amid Growing Concerns
In a separate but related development, the Nashik district administration has suspended Ashok Kharat’s arms licence. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure, considering the serious nature of the allegations against him.
Nashik Collector Ayush Prasad issued the suspension order earlier this week, citing concerns that Kharat could misuse the weapon to threaten or intimidate victims and witnesses.
According to officials, Kharat had originally obtained a revolver licence on October 15, 2012. The licence was renewed on January 1, 2024, and was valid until December 2028. However, following the registration of criminal cases against him at Sarkarwada police station, authorities seized the firearm and ammunition from his possession.
The licence was suspended under Section 17(3) of the Arms Act, which allows authorities to revoke or suspend a licence on grounds of public safety or moral misconduct. The order specifically mentioned “moral turpitude” as a valid reason for the action.

With the SIT continuing its probe and more individuals reaching out through the helpline numbers, officials anticipate that additional complaints may surface in the coming days. The investigation team is working to piece together all available evidence and testimonies to build a comprehensive case against Ashok Kharat.
