GS Malik: Senior IPS Officer Gyanendra Singh Malik Assumes Charge as Gujarat Police Chief
Gujarat has officially appointed a new permanent Director General of Police (DGP), ending a prolonged period without a full-time police chief. Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Gyanendra Singh Malik, a 1993-batch Gujarat cadre officer, formally took charge as the state’s top police official on Monday, June 8, at the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the Gujarat Police at a time when law enforcement agencies across the country are dealing with evolving security challenges, including cybercrime, organized criminal networks, and technology-driven threats. Senior police officials gathered at the state police headquarters to welcome Malik as he assumed his new responsibilities.
Ahmedabad CP Charge GS Malik to Continue Until Successor Is Appointed
Even after taking over as DGP, Malik will continue to hold the additional responsibility of Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. The Ahmedabad CP Charge GS Malik arrangement will remain in place until the state government announces a new commissioner for the city.
Before proceeding to Gandhinagar to formally assume his new role, Malik reportedly held a meeting with senior officers at the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner’s office. The meeting focused on ongoing policing priorities and administrative matters in the city.
Officials indicated that continuity in leadership is expected to help ensure that policing and law-and-order operations in Ahmedabad continue without disruption during the transition period.
Extensive Experience Across State and Central Agencies
Gyanendra Singh Malik brings more than three decades of policing and administrative experience to the position. Over the years, he has served in several key assignments within both the Gujarat government and central security organizations.
A native of Haryana, Malik holds a B.Tech degree from Banaras Hindu University and a law degree from Gujarat University. His educational background, combined with his long service record, has contributed to his reputation as a disciplined administrator with a strong focus on operational efficiency.
During his career, he has held several high-profile positions, including serving as Additional Director General in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Inspector General in the Border Security Force (BSF). He has also led important policing and investigative units within Gujarat, including serving as Director General of CID Crime.
Leadership Across Multiple Cities and Districts
Malik’s career reflects extensive field experience. He has served as Police Commissioner in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and in the Bhuj Range, giving him firsthand knowledge of policing challenges in both urban and regional environments.
At the district level, he has worked as Superintendent of Police in Diu, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad Rural, Bharuch, and Kutch. These assignments exposed him to a broad range of law-and-order situations, from coastal security concerns to rural policing and industrial-region challenges.
In addition, he has served as Chairman of the Police Constable Recruitment Board on three separate occasions and has also worked as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to a Governor, adding to his administrative credentials.
