Ahmedabad: A heartbreaking incident in the Chandkheda area of Ahmedabad has raised serious concerns about food safety and the quality of ready-to-use food products sold in local markets. Two young sisters from the same family reportedly lost their lives after allegedly suffering from food poisoning following a meal prepared with ready-made dosa batter purchased from a local dairy shop. The girls’ parents are currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment in a hospital.
The tragic episode has sparked outrage and grief among residents in Ahmedabad, while the affected family has appealed to authorities for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible if negligence is proven.
Family Claims Illness Began After Eating Dosa Made from Market Batter
According to information shared by the family, the incident took place in Maruti Plaza Residency in Chandkheda, a residential area in Ahmedabad. Gaurishankar Prajapati, the grandfather of the deceased children, alleged that the chain of events began on the evening of April 1.
He explained that his son had purchased dosa batter from a shop named Ghanshyam Dairy, located on Ayushi Road in the Chandkheda area. The batter was reportedly used later that night to prepare dosas for dinner.
After eating the meal, the family initially believed everything was normal. However, the situation took a sudden and alarming turn the next morning when his son began experiencing severe vomiting and discomfort.
“He had to be rushed to the hospital because his condition deteriorated quickly,” Prajapati said while speaking about the incident.
At that time, the family was unaware that the illness might be linked to the dosa batter. As a result, other members of the household also consumed the same food.
Several Family Members Fall Ill
Prajapati said that his daughter-in-law and their three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter later ate the same dosa prepared from the batter. Soon after, they too began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and severe illness.
As their conditions worsened, the entire family was rushed to the hospital in Ahmedabad for emergency treatment.
Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, the situation became tragic.
According to Prajapati, his two-and-a-half-month-old granddaughter, who was also affected during the incident, passed away during treatment. Later, their three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter also died while receiving medical care.
The sudden loss of the two children has left the family devastated.
Parents Remain in Critical Condition
The children’s parents continue to receive treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in Ahmedabad. Doctors are closely monitoring their condition.
Family members say the emotional and physical toll of the incident has been overwhelming.
“We have lost two innocent children. My son and daughter-in-law are still fighting for their lives,” Prajapati said.
He has urged authorities to conduct a proper investigation so that the truth behind the incident can be established.
Family Demands Justice and Investigation
The grieving grandfather has appealed to the police and food safety authorities in Ahmedabad to investigate the matter thoroughly.
He believes the ready-made batter purchased from the dairy may have caused food poisoning, although this has not yet been confirmed by officials.
Prajapati has demanded that samples of the food product be tested and that strict legal action be taken if any negligence or contamination is found.
“We want justice for our granddaughters. Authorities must investigate the dairy from where the batter was purchased. If something was wrong with the product, action must be taken so that no other family has to suffer such a loss,” he said.
The incident has also triggered concern among residents of Ahmedabad, many of whom rely on ready-made batter and packaged food items for convenience.
Police Begin Investigation
Local police confirmed that a complaint has been registered regarding the incident. Officials said they have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the illness and deaths.
A police officer involved in the case stated that food samples have been collected for testing.
“We have taken samples of the batter and sent them for forensic analysis. Once the laboratory report is received, further action will be taken based on the findings,” the officer said.
Authorities are also gathering statements from family members, medical staff, and the dairy shop involved.

Dairy Owner Denies Allegations
Meanwhile, the owner of Ghanshyam Dairy, Ketan Patel, has strongly denied the accusations made by the family.
Patel said that the batter sold to the family was prepared at the dairy itself and that the business sells a large quantity of the same product every day.
“Both individuals came to our shop that evening to buy batter, and we sold it to them,” Patel explained.
He added that the dairy sells between 100 to 125 kilograms of dosa batter daily, and the same batch is distributed to numerous customers.
“We even gave the same batter to our relatives, and many other customers bought it that day. None of them have reported any problem,” Patel said.
According to him, the batter is prepared at the dairy under regular conditions, and no other complaints have been received so far.
